Technological platforms and digital transformation are fundamental themes for researchers in a wide range of disciplines, from economics and management to engineering and the human sciences. Digital innovations, such as the Internet of Things, Big Data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and various digital technology-based platforms, are having an impact on business creation and transforming methods that go beyond the boundaries of entrepreneurship and innovation to influence culture, politics and the society. However, little research has examined the profound relationship between digital transformation, entrepreneurship and innovation, and their impact on social change in the digital age. This special issue of Innovations is dedicated to filling this gap through the publication of original research that enriches our knowledge and insights into the nature of digital transformation and its influence on entrepreneurship and innovation in platform economies. We present the emerging new business models, their antecedents and their economic and social consequences. This special issue offers a holistic study and in-depth analysis, through an interdisciplinary search of seven academic articles that highlight the current and future challenges and opportunities generated by digital transformation.
